In New Zealand, pets are treated as property under the law. That means you cannot leave money or assets directly to your pet. But you can leave your pet to someone you trust in your will, along with funds to support their care, and set out how you’d like them looked after in a statement of wishes.

Choosing the right guardian
In your will you can name a trusted person you’d like to take on the care of your pets.
What matters most is choosing someone you trust to act in their best interests. Choose a primary guardian (friend, whānau member or other trusted person), as well as a backup if circumstances change.
A statement of wishes is a document that can accompany your will. It’s a way to help you hand over special care instructions for your pet, leave personal message to loved ones and explain your instructions in your will.
