What you need to know

When a loved one passes away, their estate needs to be legally managed. This often requires probate or letters of administration (LOA).

Probate applies when there is a valid will, confirming an individual's role as executor.

LOA is needed when there is no will, giving a suitable person (usually a close relative) the authority to handle the estate. They are also necessary if there is a will, but none of the named executors are willing or able to act.
