Our investment approach
Traditionally investors have had two investment strategies to choose from...
- indexed where investments replicate market weighted benchmarks; or
- active where managers actively buy and sell securities in an attempt to outperform the market.
Public Trust's investment approach is enhanced-indexing, combining elements of both "indexed" and "active" investing, offering the potential for higher returns (like "active" investing) but with reduced fund management fees and greater simplicity (like "indexed" investing).
How does it work?
In each fund, investors' money is pooled and invested in a wider range of assets than most individuals have access to. Your money buys units in the fund.
Unit prices can go up or down, so how many units your money buys (or the money you get back when you sell) depends on the unit price at the time.
The returns you get will depend on a number of factors, including...
- the types of assets held and their performance; and
- when you choose to withdraw funds from your portfolio; and
- your Prescribed Investor Rate (PIR) tax rate; and
- fees and expenses.
No particular level of return is promised. None of Public Trust, the Government of New Zealand, the Statutory Supervisor, or any other person guarantees the repayment of any investment in the Funds, the performance of the Funds, or any particular rate of return. The value of an investment in any of the Public Trust Investment Service Funds (including returns) can decrease, as well as increase.
