What is a Will?
Your Will sets out your wishes for providing for your loved ones, and how your affairs are to be managed after you are gone. You can specify...
- who you'd like to provide for, including any gifts
- guardians for children under 18
- plans for your funeral
- an executor and trustee to carry out your wishes.
What is a Will(continued)?
Your executor and trustee is responsible for estate administration. The job starts when you pass away, and ends when everything is sorted out.
Being executor and trustee for an estate is often a complex job. It is important that whoever you choose has the right skills. Appointing a professional executor and trustee means they are experienced, independent and will manage everything. You can choose Public Trust as your executor and trustee.
What is a Will(continued)?
Your children are the most precious things you leave behind. We recommend that you name a testamentary guardian for them in your Will, in case something happens to both parents.
A testamentary guardian helps make the 'big decisions' when the parents can't - for instance about the child's education and care. For day-to-day care of a child, the testamentary guardian may need to apply to the Court for a parenting order.
