History
This award is a memorial to John Burns, a naval officer, who died in 1967 after suffering years of ill health. The John Burns Study Award was established by Patricia Burns, John's sister, after her death. Patricia Burns wanted John's memory to live on, and for the recipients to know that success could still be achieved despite adversity.
The John Burns Study Award is administered by Public Trust. Recipients are chosen by an advisory committee comprising Public Trust and the Royal New Zealand Navy.
